In the U.S., Dashers using the DoorDash debit card will earn 10% cash back on gas purchases, a big jump from the standard 2%. Drivers putting in over 125 miles on deliveries each week can get fuel payments between $5 and $15. Canadian drivers can receive up to C$36 a week.
This comes as gas prices hit an average of $3.96 per gallon in the U.S. Global oil costs surged after the Iran war started, with Iran blocking shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route.
Local reports say drivers are picking delivery routes more carefully to keep their side hustle profitable amid higher fuel costs. One driver mentioned having to "play the market" by choosing cheaper routes and juggling order options, dealing with rising gas prices and inconsistent customer tips.
