Brad Keller’s torn ulnar collateral ligament has turned an existing Phillies weakness into an immediate trade-deadline problem.
Philadelphia placed the right-handed reliever on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 13, and recalled right-hander Seth Johnson. Keller is likely finished for the 2026 season. If the injury requires Tommy John surgery, he could also miss most or all of 2027.
That uncertainty carries financial weight. Keller, who is approaching his 31st birthday, signed a two-year, $22 million contract during the offseason. A lengthy rehabilitation could prevent him from pitching again before that deal expires.
For the moment, however, the Phillies must replace his innings. Keller had a 4.02 ERA, a 114 ERA+ and 32 strikeouts against 13 walks over 31 1/3 innings. Those are not dominant numbers, but he had been trusted in a setup role—and that role matters more than his ERA alone suggests.
The problem is getting the game to Jhoan Duran
All-Star closer Jhoan Duran gives Philadelphia a strong option at the end of games. The path to him is considerably less secure.
Entering the second half, Phillies relievers ranked 21st in MLB with a 4.44 ERA. They were also 25th in opponents’ batting average at .253 and 20th with a 1.35 WHIP. Keller’s injury removes one of the right-handed options manager Don Mattingly could use before the ninth inning.
The struggles have been particularly severe on the left side. Tanner Banks, José Alvarado and Kyle Backhus each carried an ERA above 5.80. Collectively, the three had allowed 58 earned runs in 77 1/3 innings, producing a 6.75 ERA.
That imbalance makes Keller’s absence more consequential. Philadelphia has not simply lost another bullpen arm; it has lost a right-handed setup reliever from a group in which several left-handers were already having difficult seasons.
Why a roster replacement is not a role replacement
Johnson fills Keller’s place on the active roster, but adding a pitcher does not automatically restore the bullpen’s previous structure. High-leverage innings are assigned through trust, recent performance and matchup considerations. A newly recalled arm cannot be assumed to inherit Keller’s setup responsibilities immediately.
Consider a straightforward October-style scenario: a Phillies starter leaves after six innings with a one-run lead, while Duran is being held for the ninth. Before Keller’s injury, the manager had another established right-hander available to help cover the bridge. Now those seventh- and eighth-inning outs must be reassigned, potentially pushing another reliever into an unfamiliar role or forcing Duran into earlier work.
One absence can therefore affect several jobs. The replacement does not only need to produce acceptable innings; Philadelphia needs enough dependable options to keep the entire late-game sequence from becoming fragile.
The underlying numbers offer hope, not a solution
The bullpen’s eighth-place ranking in fielding independent pitching is substantially better than its ERA ranking. FIP focuses on outcomes pitchers control most directly, including strikeouts, walks and home runs. The gap suggests Philadelphia’s relievers may have pitched better than the runs allowed indicate, with factors such as sequencing and balls in play contributing to the poor results.
That is a useful distinction, but it does not remove the need for reinforcements. A contender cannot plan around statistical improvement alone, especially after losing a setup reliever for what is likely the rest of the season. Encouraging underlying performance may help the front office evaluate which current pitchers are worth retaining in important roles. It does not create another healthy arm.
Keller’s injury changes the deadline calculation
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski already had several needs to address before the Aug. 3 trade deadline. The Phillies could use another starting pitcher and a right-handed-hitting outfielder, while bullpen help was likely on the agenda even before Keller went down.
The injury may force Philadelphia to pursue multiple relievers rather than one upgrade. That changes both the cost and complexity of the club’s deadline work. Acquiring a single late-inning specialist would strengthen the top of the depth chart, but it might not supply enough volume to cover Keller’s lost innings and protect a struggling group underneath.
The practical shopping list now looks something like this:
- At least one dependable late-inning reliever who can work in front of Duran.
- Potentially a second bullpen arm to restore depth and reduce pressure on the current left-handers.
- Another starter and a right-handed-hitting outfielder, needs that did not disappear when Keller was injured.
The difficult part may be supply. Relief pitching is commonly available near the deadline, but a low threshold for remaining in contention could leave fewer clubs willing to sell. If several buyers chase the same limited group of relievers, Philadelphia may have to pay more or move earlier than planned.
What to watch before Aug. 3
The first question is medical: whether Keller undergoes Tommy John surgery and how that decision affects his possible return during the second year of his contract.
On the field, Johnson’s usage should reveal whether the Phillies view him as a candidate for meaningful late innings or primarily as immediate depth. The performance of Banks, Alvarado and Backhus will also matter. Any sign of stabilization could reduce the need for a broad bullpen overhaul, although it would not replace Keller’s right-handed role.
The clearest signal will come from the number and type of relievers Philadelphia targets. One acquisition would suggest the front office believes the bullpen’s underlying numbers can translate into better results. Two would amount to a stronger acknowledgment that the bridge to Duran needs to be rebuilt for a playoff race.
The Phillies have returned to playoff position and NL East contention under Mattingly. Keller’s injury does not change their status as buyers. It makes the price of standing still much easier to see.
